The Role of Sports Medicine in Endurance Athletics

I’m always jealous of reading articles about elite runners and their sports medicine teams. They have daily access to sports medicine doctors, physical therapists, nutritionists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and the list goes on. If you want to run faster, in many cases increasing your training load (volume, intensity, or frequency) of running is necessary and you are constantly walking on the edge of over loading too much. The sports medicine literature is very clear when it comes to the major causes of running injury and right at the top is piling on training load too quickly, so this is one of the reasons elite runners have sports medicine teams to aid in their recovery in hopes of preventing injury and allowing the athlete to handle more training load. There are many other factors that help aid in handling these high training loads, but having the right sports medicine professionals can play a big part.

Now most of us can’t afford to have a whole sports medicine team and that is why it’s very important to research who you work with. I’m very picky in what sports medicine professionals I have my athletes work with, because it’s crucial that these professionals work together with the coach and other professionals in their field and be up to date with the latest research. Be sure to pick your sports medicine team or individuals wisely and make sure your goals and individual needs are their focus.
